Bishop calls for review of ‘transgender inclusion guidelines’ in community sports

Transgender sports news

Sport and Recreation Minister Chris Bishop has requested Sport NZ to review and update its 2022 “Guiding Principles for the Inclusion of Transgender People in Community Sport,” highlighting concerns over fairness and safety in addition to “diversity” and “inclusion”.

The guidelines, which were intended to assist sporting bodies with voluntary recommendations, have become a focal point as issues surrounding transgender participation in community sports grow more complex.

Bishop, referencing the National-New Zealand First Coalition Agreement, said there was the need for publicly funded sporting bodies to support fair competition that isn’t compromised by gender-related rules.

While recognising the importance of “inclusion” for transgender athletes, Bishop stated that the principles must also address legitimate concerns about fairness and safety in sport. He has asked Sport NZ’s Chief Executive, Raelene Castle, to lead a review of the guidelines, with an update expected in the coming months.
