Grandmaster returns to international chess champs after federation relaxes dress code

Magnus Carlsen news
Magnus Carlsen, X.

Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top chess player, will rejoin the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships after the sport’s governing body, FIDE, eased its dress code rules.

Carlsen had withdrawn mid-tournament in protest after being told he could not compete in jeans, despite having already played several rounds in the attire. FIDE’s updated rules now allow for “elegant minor deviations,” including appropriate jeans, prompting Carlsen to confirm his return and declare he will play in jeans.

The controversy highlights Carlsen’s maverick reputation, which has made him both a celebrated and polarising figure in the chess world.

  1. Another ‘generation me’ ‘millennial’ changing the rules because he’s “special”…

see what we have to put up with!

  2. Why the hell does chess now require a dress code?

Weren’t the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians who invented it essentially all wearing speedos?

Isn’t modern day New York’s Central Park semi-famous for its chess hobos?

    These people need to chillax.

  3. Who cares if he plays in a pair of shorts and singlet? Its the quality of the game that matters. As for jeans they are accepted everywhere these days.

    Suffice to say, childish nonsense.
