Phoenix upset Sydney FC to extend unbeaten start to 2026

The Wellington Phoenix continued their unbeaten start to 2026 with a composed 0–2 away win over second-placed Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium, following recent road victories in Brisbane and Sydney.

Carlo Armiento put the visitors ahead before halftime with a deflected free kick on his return from suspension, and Isaac Hughes sealed the result shortly after the break with a close-range header.

Sydney played the entire second half with 10 men after Rhys Youlley was sent off late in the first half, but struggled to mount a serious challenge as Wellington controlled the contest with discipline and structure.

The win lifts the Phoenix to eighth on the A-League ladder, just two points outside the top six with a game in hand, ahead of their next fixture away to Newcastle on Friday night.
