A leading American neuroscientist has warned of “more people dying” as the controversial collision sport “run it straight” launches a six-city tour across the United States.
The Australian-based Runit League will begin trials on the West Coast on November 18, backed by a US$40,000 prize pool and social media hype that has drawn more than 600,000 followers.
Dr Chris Nowinski of the Concussion Legacy Foundation told legacy media the sport was a “backwards step in human development,” warning that participants may not grasp the risks of traumatic brain injury and CTE, while medical experts compare the collisions to severe car crashes.
The two-week US tour is scheduled to run from November 18, with trial events planned in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Santa Monica, Irvine, Seattle and Austin, each offering cash prizes for top finishers.
