World number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner opened his US Open title defence with a commanding 6-1 6-1 6-2 win over Czech debutant Vit Kopriva, showing no signs of the illness that cut short his Cincinnati Open final last week.
The 24-year-old Italian, who has now won 22 straight matches at hard-court Grand Slams, needed just one hour and 38 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance, setting up a second-round clash with Australia’s Alexei Popyrin.
Sinner, winner of three of the past four majors, said he was “very happy to be healthy again” as he looks to continue his remarkable run. Elsewhere, compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, and Canada’s Denis Shapovalov also progressed with straight-sets victories.
