Australia has extended the North West Shelf, one of its largest fossil fuel projects, by 40 years to 2070.
Environment Minister Murray Watt said the approval includes 48 strict conditions, requiring Woodside Energy to cut certain gas emissions by 2030, achieve “net zero” by 2050, and protect Indigenous Murujuga rock art near the Karratha facility.
The safeguards include restricting air emissions, legal requirements to consult Indigenous communities, and a monitoring system to ensure compliance.
The licence, originally due to expire in 2030, covers the country’s major gas processing and export plant, which has operated for over four decades. Woodside welcomed the decision, saying it ensures reliable energy supply.
