Caracas condemns Trump’s oil blockade as ‘colonial’ power grab

Venezuela has sharply criticised President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an oil blockade, accusing Washington of pursuing a long-standing strategy to seize the country’s natural resources under the guise of sanctions enforcement.

In a statement released late Tuesday, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez said Trump’s public comments laid bare what she described as the United States’ real objective: control over Venezuela’s oil, land and mineral wealth.

She rejected claims by the US president that Caracas had “stolen” American assets, calling the accusation baseless and inflammatory.

Rodríguez condemned Trump’s language as interventionist and colonial, arguing that orders to deploy US naval forces in the Caribbean to block so-called sanctioned tankers amounted to a violation of international law. She said the move breached principles of free trade and freedom of navigation, and represented an unlawful attempt to strangle Venezuela’s economy.

The statement accused Washington of waging a sustained campaign of misinformation to justify what it characterised as economic and military coercion. According to Rodríguez, successive US administrations have sought to dominate Venezuela politically and economically, regardless of changes in leadership in Washington.

Caracas said it would defend its rights under international law, the Venezuelan constitution and the United Nations Charter, reaffirming its sovereignty over natural resources and its right to engage in free navigation and commerce in regional and international waters.

“Venezuela will never again submit to colonial rule,” the government said, vowing to resist any foreign effort to control its territory or resources.
