‘Experts’ propose ‘spare bedroom tax’ in Melbourne

Melbourne spare bedroom tax news

The push to introduce a “spare bedroom tax” in Melbourne has sparked heated debate, with critics slamming it as yet another desperate attempt by government and “experts” to squeeze ordinary Australians while failing to fix the real causes of the city’s housing crisis.

The proposal, floated during economic reform discussions, would see households penalised for unused bedrooms on the grounds that too many homes are “inefficiently allocated.” Research cited by property analysts shows most households now consist of just one or two people, yet three-quarters of homes are family-sized, with at least three bedrooms.

Critics argue this approach ignores structural issues: sluggish homebuilding, restrictive planning rules, high land costs, and lending practices that favour traditional family homes.

Imposing the new taxe on homeowners risked being perceived as a revenue grab rather than genuine reform, particularly when spare rooms are often used for practical needs like home offices, guests, or future family changes, say critics.

  1. This is really a tax on the family home, by stealth. They want people living in tenements, “hells kitchen” style, not owning their own homes.

Victoria Australia is a good place to stay well away from.

    • Methinks the Collective West is being taken over by Bolshevism and therefore a place to escape from before the gates slam shut.

  2. Ohh Why not just take all from those that have then those that have will never work and everyone will be happy in a third world where nothing happens.

  3. A spare bedroom normally houses an office, a workroom, a guest room, gym equipment, a music room, a sewing room, all types of stuff which would be a hindrance in the corridor or living room, depending on the household. Why do the corporate media always cite ‘experts’? Is this the go to language for describing the type of one dimensional brain of a government bureaucrat asking ChatGPT how to balance the budget? ‘Experts’ are everywhere. Just like ‘Water, water, everywhere but not a drop to drink.’, ‘experts, experts, everywhere, but none of them can think!’
