A Greenland glacier once portrayed as a symbol of irreversible climate collapse has instead shown significant regrowth more than a decade after alarmist legacy media predictions of its demise.
In 2012, international coverage of Greenland’s Petermann Glacier warned the massive ice formation was “hemorrhaging” and could disappear within years after dramatic satellite images showed large sections breaking away. The glacier was widely cited as evidence of accelerating Arctic melt and looming environmental catastrophe.
However, the latest recent satellite observations, from 2024, show the glacier has rebuilt the same section that was previously highlighted as proof of terminal decline. Reports circulating from updated imagery claim the glacier has advanced roughly 30 kilometres since 2012, reversing part of the retreat that drew global attention at the time.
The development is being cited by critics of climate alarmism as evidence that long-term ice behaviour can be more complex and variable than widely reported during periods of dramatic ice loss.
Attention has also turned to broader Arctic conditions. Despite repeated predictions over the past two decades that the Arctic Ocean would soon experience an “ice-free summer,” supporters of the new claims argue official datasets show overall summer sea ice extent has remained relatively stable for around 18 years.
