Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has called for the country to take control of large areas of southern Lebanon, suggesting the border should be pushed north to the Litani River, around 40 kilometres from Israel’s current frontier.
Speaking on Israeli radio he said the ongoing military campaign against Hezbollah should result in a “different reality,” including both weakening the militant group and redefining Israel’s borders.
The conflict escalated in early March after Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with Israel responding through airstrikes and ground operations.
Authorities in Lebanon report hundreds killed, thousands injured, and more than a million displaced.
Israel has urged civilians to leave areas south of the Litani, while its military signals plans to expand operations. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not commented on Smotrich’s remarks, though officials have previously warned Lebanon could lose territory if Hezbollah is not disarmed. International concern is mounting, with Emmanuel Macron among those criticising Israel’s actions.

The IDF have Tank Batalions in South Lebanon already. Litani River sounds reasonable to eradicate Hezbollah. Zaphrani River might be more successful.
