A massive fire broke out at a chemical lab in Conyers, Georgia, USA early Sunday morning, releasing hazardous smoke and prompting mass evacuations.
Footage from the scene shows thick clouds of smoke billowing from the BioLab facility on Old Covington Highway, following an explosion caused by a faulty sprinkler system that sprayed water on dangerous chemicals.
The fire, which began around 5 a.m., led to the rapid formation of a toxic smoke cloud, forcing local authorities to issue evacuation orders for areas between Sigman Road and Interstate 20. Residents north of the site were instructed to shelter in place by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, with officials urging them to remain indoors and keep windows closed to avoid exposure to potential hazards.
Firefighters initially contained the blaze to the building’s roof, but the flames reignited hours later, according to WSBTV. Pallets containing water-reactive chemicals are being removed from the site, although the exact nature of the substances remains unclear.
The evacuation order continues, with local roads and Interstate 20 closed off as emergency crews work to manage the situation. Several evacuation shelters have been set up, including JP Carr Gym, Scout Camp, and Wolverine Gym.
Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett urged residents to avoid the area, stressing, “It’s burning pretty good, and we’re working hard to get it under control.” Meanwhile, Fire Chief Marian McDaniel emphasized that the situation remains unpredictable due to shifting winds.
This is the second major fire at the BioLab facility in the last decade. In 2020, a similar incident occurred when Hurricane Laura caused rainwater to seep into the building, sparking a chemical fire. BioLab manufactures pool and spa treatment products. Emergency services are continuing their efforts to contain the blaze and ensure public safety.
