New Hungarian PM rejects majority of EU demands

Newly-elected Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has indicated he would meet only four of the European Union’s 27 conditions, while maintaining most of the country’s existing policy direction.

Magyar said his government would prioritise anti-corruption measures, judicial independence, press funding reforms, and academic freedom, but resist broader changes sought by the EU.

He signalled continuity on key domestic policies, including maintaining tax exemptions for mothers, preserving pension settings, and avoiding income tax increases. Magyar also reaffirmed a hardline stance on migration, backing the continuation of Viktor Orban’s southern border fence and rejecting the EU’s migration pact. On energy and foreign policy, he identified the Druzhba pipeline as critical to the economy and ruled out support for Ukraine’s EU membership unless guarantees are secured for ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia.

The Druzhba pipeline is one of the largest and oldest oil pipeline networks in the world, supplying Russian crude oil directly into Central and Eastern Europe. For countries like Hungary, it is a primary, cost-effective supply route that feeds refineries and underpins national fuel security.

Magyar further indicated Hungary would opt out of EU financial support for Ukraine and hold a referendum on its accession, while continuing assistance programmes for Hungarian communities abroad. Despite this, he suggested Budapest would no longer block EU decisions on funding or weapons for Ukraine, marking a shift in approach.

Analysts say the position points to a largely centre-right, pragmatic leadership style, with limited divergence from the policies of Viktor Orbán despite campaign messaging signalling change.

  1. Were Orban and Magyar playing 5D chess? I did think it was strange Orban conceded after only 40% of the vote counted.
