Over 1.2 million working-age migrants in U.K claiming state benefits

UK immigration news

More than 1.26 million migrants are now receiving Universal Credit in the UK, according to newly released data from the Department for Work and Pensions, up from 883,470 in 2022.

The figures, published following a government commitment to transparency, show most claimants are not in employment and represent a 50% rise over three years.

The sharp increase has triggered criticism from media commentators, with GB News host Bev Turner calling the figures “deeply embarrassing” for both the current and former governments.

“…there’s been a 50 per cent in three years? 50 per cent increase in the number of migrants claiming Universal Credit? That is just astonishing”, she said.

The data has also reignited public debate over welfare eligibility and immigration policy, despite only certain migrants—such as those with refugee or settled status—being legally entitled to claim.

Universal Credit is the UK government’s main welfare benefit for people of working age. It is designed to support individuals or families with low income or no income, replacing six older “legacy” benefits, including Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, and Housing Benefit.
