A recent study analysing over a century of rainfall data in Spain has found no increase in extreme precipitation events over the past 50 years, contradicting “climate computer model predictions”.
Despite this, the Spanish government has linked the recent deadly flooding in Valencia to so-called “climate change”.
The study, partly funded by the Spanish government and published in the International Journal of Climatology, provides the most extensive dataset of extraordinary rainfall events in Spain, spanning from 1916 to 2022. Researchers compiled data from 4,325 observatories and recorded nearly 19,200 instances of daily rainfall exceeding 100mm. They found that while heavy rainfall is more frequent in autumn and near coastal areas, there is no discernible upward trend in extreme rainfall events over recent decades.
Climate scientist Javier Vinos highlighted the findings on social media, criticizing the Spanish government’s narrative. “Scientists show that, contrary to what models predict, extreme rainfall events have not increased in Spain in 50 years of global warming. However, the Spanish government is using the recent flooding in Valencia to say that climate change is killing people,” Vinos tweeted.
The government’s response to the Valencia floods comes amid growing debates over the role of climate change in extreme weather events.
While officials point to global warming as a driver of deadly floods, the study suggests natural variability and geographical factors remain the primary influences on extraordinary rainfall. The dataset, which includes newly digitised historical records, is now available for further analysis, raising questions about how scientific findings align with political and media narratives on climate change.

Spain’s climate nuts (Their Govt) removed over 200 Dams from their rivers in 2022.
And now they wonder why it floods more….
And a ‘little directed energy’ goes a long way too.
Just like in NZ councils don’t clean leaves out of storm water drains like they used to and when we have a downpour we get flooding, no wonder.
And councils call this flooding a climate change event.
Is this intentional to steer the public to believe in climate change, or incompetence?
.
It’s called WEATHER, damn it!
Look around: every landscape has been created by disastrous weather phenomenons, quite likely eroded/created in recent (but forgotten) history.
