Starmer’s Internet crackdown set to tighten digital controls

Starmer social media ban

The UK Government is preparing to unveil sweeping new online restrictions in the coming days aimed at children and teenagers, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer expected to adopt measures inspired by Australia’s social media ban.

The first stage of the plan would require technology companies to deploy tools preventing minors from creating, storing or sharing intimate images, with firms facing potential fines, sales restrictions or criminal sanctions if they fail to comply within 90 days. Proposals under consideration also include stricter age-verification requirements and limits on features considered addictive, such as autoplay functions, endless scrolling, livestreaming, location sharing and popularity metrics like “likes.”

UK Children’s Commissioner Rachel de Souza has called for protections to cover all under-18s and extend beyond social media to gaming platforms, AI chatbots and other digital services.

The planned reforms follow growing concerns over children’s exposure to harmful online content and are expected to represent one of the most far-reaching expansions of internet regulation since the introduction of the Online Safety Act.
