Three people have been killed after a light aircraft crashed and burst into flames shortly after take-off at Shellharbour Airport, south of Wollongong, around 10am on Saturday.
The plane, which was bound for Bathurst, caught fire upon impact, with Fire and Rescue NSW crews quickly extinguishing the blaze. Inspector Andrew Barber said a local RFS unit conducting training nearby reached the scene within minutes, but the occupants “had no chance of being saved” due to the intense fuel combustion.
No other injuries were reported, and police have established a crime scene while the Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigates the cause of the crash.
