U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on products from South Korea and Japan, with additional duties targeting several other nations, as part of a renewed push to protect American industries and encourage trade deals.
The tariffs, originally paused for 90 days, are now set to take effect on August 1.
Letters outlining the tariffs were shared publicly by Trump, reinforcing his “Liberation Day” strategy from April.
While the administration argues the tariffs will boost domestic manufacturing, some economists warn of rising prices and strained international relations. The US has already struck limited agreements with the UK, Vietnam, and China, and is in active talks with India and the EU.
