An independent review into the handling of the 2019 crash that killed 19-year-old motorcyclist Harry Dunn has found that U.S. diplomat Anne Sacoolas, who was driving on the wrong side of the road, “could and should have been arrested” at the scene.
The report criticised Northamptonshire Police for prioritising Sacoolas’s welfare, failing to collect key evidence, and mishandling diplomatic immunity issues.
Sacoolas fled the UK shortly after the incident under diplomatic cover and later received a suspended sentence.
Dunn’s family accused police leadership, particularly former chief constable Nick Adderley, of failing them, calling the case a “devastating example of systemic failure and poor accountability”.
Family spokesperson Radd Seiger said it was “astonishing” how police mishandled what he called a “relatively straightforward road traffic collision… wrong right from the start,” placing blame not on junior officers but on leadership, which the report heavily criticised.
“They should have arrested her; had they arrested her, the course of justice might have been different. We’ll never know now,” he said. Highlighting the broader implications, Seiger added,
“The police are such a fundamental public body in our society, and we trust them. Six years ago, things could not have been handled any worse.”

The woman is a cowardly criminal who took advantage of her position as well as ” authorities” and not only the police who made her escape possible.
