US Congressman accused of rape and sexual misconduct

Four women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell, including a former staffer who claims she was sexually assaulted during encounters in 2019 and again in 2024.

Swalwell is the leading Democratic Party contender for California Governor.

According to CNN, the woman alleges the incidents occurred when she was heavily intoxicated, describing one instance in which she said she resisted and told him to stop. She also claims a prior encounter left her with no memory of events but physical indications of sexual contact. Supporting accounts from friends, family, and contemporaneous messages reviewed by media outlets are said to corroborate key aspects of her timeline.

Three other women have made separate allegations, ranging from unwanted physical advances to claims of receiving unsolicited explicit messages and images. One woman said interactions that began through political discussions escalated into inappropriate behaviour during a night out, while others described patterns of communication that became increasingly sexual over time, often via disappearing-message platforms. Several of the women said they felt influenced by Swalwell’s position and status, and some maintained contact with him afterward despite discomfort, citing professional concerns or fear of repercussions.

Swalwell has categorically denied all allegations, calling them false and politically motivated, and has signalled potential legal action against accusers. His legal team has issued cease-and-desist letters to some of the women, disputing their accounts and pointing to ongoing contact after the alleged incidents as undermining their claims. While some former staffers have defended him as professional, others who spoke out said the experiences had lasting emotional effects and that they chose to come forward after learning similar allegations had surfaced.

Several videos have since circulated online of Swalwell, a married father of three, engaging with sex workers and in other suspect or drunken behaviour.
