Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirmed his commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons, describing it as his “ultimate goal” during a political debate on Saturday.

Ishiba shared his personal reflection on witnessing a video of the U.S. nuclear bombing of Hiroshima as a child, calling it a shocking experience that has driven his determination to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.

Speaking the day after a Japanese anti-nuclear group, founded by survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, won the Nobel Peace Prize, Ishiba spoke of the importance of nuclear abolition.

However, he acknowledged that a nuclear-free world may not be immediately achievable due to the role nuclear deterrence plays in global security.

Ishiba called for thorough discussions on how to balance deterrence with the long-term goal of nuclear disarmament, while reiterating his desire to ensure that the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are never repeated.

  1. I don’t think nuclear weapons are “the problem”. It is humanities belligerence towards each other that is the real problem: Using religion, ideology, culture or cult as an excuse to hide behind to harm “the other”.

If we got rid of nuclear weapons, biological and chemical weapons, guns and bullets, fighter jets and missiles, tanks and munitions I bet that we would still be banging rocks into each other’s heads, at least some of us.
