NSW police officer guilty of manslaughter for tasering 95-year-old woman

A New South Wales police officer, Kristian White, has been found guilty of manslaughter following the death of 95-year-old Clare Nowland, who was tasered in her aged care home.

The incident occurred in May 2023 at Yallambee Lodge in Cooma when Nowland, suffering from dementia, was seen roaming with a walker while holding a steak knife.

After being tasered, she fell, struck her head, and died a week later from an inoperable brain bleed.

A NSW Supreme Court jury determined that White’s actions were criminally negligent, deciding that his use of force was unnecessary and excessive, particularly given Nowland’s frailty and the officers’ ability to avoid danger without resorting to a taser.

The verdict brought relief to Nowland’s family, who thanked the judicial and prosecution teams for their work.

White, who faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison, will remain on bail pending further court proceedings.

During the trial, Crown Prosecutor Brett Hatfield argued that White breached his duty of care, committing manslaughter through negligence or an unlawful act.
