Updated: Life sentence for killer in murder case that has gripped Italy

A verdict is expected in the trial of Filippo Turetta, 22, accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old biomedical engineering student Giulia Cecchettin, in a crime that shocked Italy and ignited a national conversation about violence against women.

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for Turetta, who admitted to stabbing Cecchettin over 70 times on November 11, 2023, after she ended their relationship.

The brutal killing, which occurred just days before Cecchettin’s graduation, left the nation grappling with issues of toxic relationships. Cecchettin’s family has used the tragedy to raise awareness of the warning signs of controlling relationships, sharing personal details of the psychological abuse Giulia endured.

The case has become a rallying cry for action against gender-based violence, sparking protests and increased calls to anti-violence hotlines.

Giulia’s father, Gino Cecchettin, has toured schools sharing her story, while her sister Elena’s emotional appeal highlighted societal complicity in perpetuating “male dominance”.

NGOs and opposition politicians have criticised the government’s lack of concrete steps to combat such violence, while the Cecchettin family’s activism has inspired many to confront hidden psychological abuse.

Updated 4 December 2024: Filippo Turetta has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend, Giulia Cecchettin.

  1. I don t know if in this case this applies.
But many, many young (and not so young) males in europe use cocaine and all kind of drugs.
It destroys not only their brain, but make them extremely aggressive and dangerous.
And it affects all layers of society
