Researchers at the University of Cambridge have reported early human trial results for a vaccine whose key antigen was designed entirely using artificial intelligence (AI).
The project aims to create a single jab capable of targeting a broad range of coronaviruses, including existing Covid-19 variants and “related animal viruses” that could potentially infect humans in the future.
The AI system analysed genetic data from multiple coronaviruses and produced a synthetic antigen intended to generate immunity across the wider virus family rather than a single strain.
The first human trial involved 39 participants and was designed primarily to assess safety. According to findings published in the Journal of Infection, the vaccine produced what researchers described as a modest immune response. A larger trial involving around 200 people is now underway to further examine immune system effects. Researchers say the approach could eventually be applied to influenza, H5N1 bird flu and viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.
While several scientists involved in the project have described the technology as a potential advance in vaccine development, the concept remains in the early testing phase. Human efficacy data demonstrating protection against infection, disease or future outbreaks has not yet been established, and further clinical studies will be required to determine its effectiveness and safety.
