A 21-year-old North Carolina man was shot and killed after allegedly forcing his way into the protected grounds of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach early Sunday morning.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin.
The U.S. Secret Service said the incident unfolded about 1:30am when the suspect made an “unauthorized entry” near the property’s north gate while carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. Law enforcement officers moved to intercept the man inside the estate’s inner security perimeter, where the confrontation quickly escalated. Authorities confirmed that Trump was not in Florida at the time and no Secret Service personnel or local deputies were injured.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said a deputy and two Secret Service agents ordered the man to drop the items, but the situation turned critical moments later. “He put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” Bradshaw told reporters. “At that point in time, the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their weapons and neutralized the threat.”
