Collins Law Commission appointment criticised

Collins Law Commission appointment questioned

Judith Collins was the only person considered for appointment as Law Commission president, with the role confirmed through Cabinet without a recruitment process, selection panel, or competing candidates, according to government responses to Green Party questions.

While the Law Commission Act only requires ministerial approval, Cabinet guidelines recommend broader “good practice” appointment processes. Chlöe Swarbrick criticised the move as damaging to public trust and raising concerns about potential cronyism, while responsible minister Paul Goldsmith defended the process, saying practices have varied historically and emphasising Collins’ extensive justice experience.

A spokesperson said Collins ‘recused herself’ from the decision, and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon had earlier announced she would leave politics to take up the role mid-year.

Legal academic Andrew Geddis told state media flexible past processes exist but described this case as appearing “nakedly political”, warning it could undermine confidence in the commission’s independence, despite acknowledging Collins may still perform effectively in the position.

  1. Like Swarbrick, Collins achieved nothing during her 24 year parliamentary career, unless you count the record election defeat Collins lead National to.

So dont worry, Collins wont achieve anything at the law commission either.

  2. Sixty seven years of age. These old tarts really hang on to the income. She is probably already receiving that nice fat super package the politicians voted for themselves during the Muldoon years, plus they can also apply for national superannuation, plus her political salary for which she does absolutely nothing, now being slid into a nice little position which she will probably vacate only upon death.
And with a backside on her already two axehandles across, that can’t be far away.

  3. The fox in the hen house?
As if the law could become more unjust for families, children and fathers.
Collins has one son and speaks highly of motherhood and family. Will she look at the dismal state of jurisprudence?

  4. Not good but not surprising either. We need to inject some integrity, accountability and fairness into government in NZ. Please don’t vote for globalist parties this election.
