A mass grave has been uncovered inside a former State Security building in southern Idlib province, adding to a growing list of grim discoveries linked to Syria’s years of conflict and repression.
Syrian state news agency SANA reported that the remains were found on Tuesday during renovation work at the facility in the city of Maaret al-Numan.
The building previously served as a State Security headquarters before it fell outside the control of the Assad government in 2019. Construction was immediately suspended after workers discovered human remains buried within the structure.
Security forces reportedly moved quickly to cordon off the site and restrict access while further steps are taken. No information is available on the size of the grave, or its age.
Authorities have not released information on how many bodies were found or whether the remains have been identified.
The discovery comes amid a wider pattern of mass grave findings across Syria, particularly at former detention and security sites. Following the capture of Damascus late last year by a coalition led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, at least 66 mass graves have reportedly been uncovered nationwide.
These sites may help shed light on the fate of more than 170,000 people who are still listed as missing.
In December last year, another mass grave discovered outside Damascus was reported to contain at least 100,000 bodies.
A few footnotes/links would be helpful to verify such allegations.
