More than 100 police officers are being investigated after an internal audit revealed around 30,000 alcohol breath tests were falsely recorded between July 2024 and September 2025.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Michael Johnson descrribed the discovery to state-funded media as “incredibly disappointing and concerning,” saying the anomalies were detected by the National Road Policing Centre’s data team. The audit, covering over 5 million tests, found that some staff had simulated results without testing actual drivers. Disciplinary processes are now underway for about 120 officers, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will oversee proceedings.

Johnson said the integrity breach, while serious, did not compromise the force’s annual testing targets under the $1.3 billion Road Policing Investment Programme. Both Police Minister Mark Mitchell and Transport Minister Chris Bishop expressed concern, stressing that standards must remain high. Despite the falsified data, police met their obligation to deliver 3.3 million tests and reported a nearly 40 percent drop in alcohol-related deaths last year, crediting intensified enforcement. Johnson said the findings served as a reminder of the need for accuracy and honesty in public service.

  1. A fish rots from the head. Clearly there needs to be probe into the lack of leadership skills within police senior management.

  2. Never mind. The police complaint authority will recommend those accuse police officers will need counselling and more training more training.

  3. I guess the people who were tested didn’t give the Masonic ‘All-Hailing Sign of Distress’ accompanied by the phrase ‘Oh Lord, My God, is there no help for the Poor Widow’s Son?”…
    But, when you have Police Sergeant Hiram Abiff and his three Ruffian Constables Jubalo, Jubalah and Jubalum working the line of cars waiting for the drivers to be tested, the expediancy of driving between the two cones of Boaz and Jachin becomes paramount.
    Pay your fine both at the cop shop, and over at the lodge!

      • Yes…it goes something like this;
        “Your Honour, we have been on the level with you, and are hoping for a square deal!”
        As the lawyers do this, they perform the Masonic Shuffle of one heel grazing in towards the other foot’s instep…making it look just like a natural walking pace in Court.
        Then, they hold their right hand up near their upper chest below the throat with the thumb, forefinger and middle finger showing whilst hiding the other fingers.
        Looks perfectly natural and innocent unless you have been schooled on what these gestures mean.
        The Judge may respond with “In light of” other pending factors that are stretched either for a dismissal or conviction, the GAOTU is apparent and everlasting in the ‘court’.

  4. If a cop pretends to be doing breath tests, then he’s not issuing tickets, he’s just reporting x number of fake ‘passes’ on his sheet to fill in some bureaucratic quota.

    I say good on him. The cops shouldn’t be hassling innocent drivers with their stupid random breath checks. They should be doing proper work catching criminals.
