Tongan-born NZ boxer dies saving his sons in holiday tragedy

Tongan-born New Zealand heavyweight boxer Semisi Kalu, a former 2010 Commonwealth Games representative and Auckland business owner, died while rescuing two of his sons from dangerous surf during a family holiday in Tonga on 19 November.

The family had been visiting Kalu’s mother when two boys were swept out too far; Kalu managed to save both, but died at the scene despite CPR attempts. His wife, Alexandria Ma’ilei Kalu, paid tribute to her “hero” in emotional messages, saying he sacrificed his life to protect their children.

Relatives, including Olympic medallist Paea Wolfgramm, described the loss as devastating and praised Kalu’s work ethic and dedication to his family.

The family has since returned to Auckland with Kalu’s body, with services held in Papakura and a burial planned at Manukau Memorial Gardens.
