FIA eases penalties for swearing and criticism after backlash from F1 drivers

Formula 1 news

The FIA has scaled back penalties for Formula 1 drivers who swear or criticise officials, following strong opposition from the racing community.

New guidelines slash the initial fine from €40,000 to €5,000 and remove the threat of race bans, although harsher penalties remain possible for extreme cases.

Additional changes include eliminating increased fines for top-tier drivers and distinguishing between infractions made during competition and those in calmer settings like press conferences.

The policy shift follows protests from drivers, including an open letter and criticism from George Russell, after strict measures were introduced in response to Max Verstappen’s outburst in 2023.
