Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency following a surge in terrorist attacks and mass abductions that forced him to cancel a planned trip to the G20 Summit.
Tinubu has ordered a major recruitment drive, directing police to hire 20,000 additional officers and expanding new armed forces intake to 50,000, with extra personnel deployed to the worst-affected regions.
He also approved the temporary use of NYSC camps for training and mandated retraining for officers reassigned from VIP duties.
The announcement comes amid a series of large-scale kidnappings, including the abduction of over 300 students and 12 teachers in Papiri, as well as deadly attacks on worshippers in Eruku.
Tinubu praised recent rescue operations and vowed continued efforts.
