Former FBI Director Robert Mueller has died at the age of 81, closing the chapter on a long career in US law enforcement that later became defined by his role in the Russia investigation into Donald Trump.
His death prompted a blunt response from Trump, who wrote on Truth Social: “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people.”
Mueller, who led the FBI from 2001 to 2013, was appointed special counsel to investigate alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election—an inquiry that dominated much of Trump’s presidency, and which became known as the ‘Russiagate hoax’.
The probe resulted in charges against several Trump associates, including Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn, while examining alleged links between the campaign and Russia. Mueller’s final report did not establish a criminal conspiracy, and he stopped short of determining whether Trump obstructed justice.
His family confirmed he passed away on Friday night, asking for privacy. Mueller had been battling Parkinson’s disease since 2021 and had withdrawn from public life due to declining health.
