Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old refugee who fled war-torn Ukraine for a new life in the U.S., was fatally stabbed on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 22.
Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old repeat offender Decarlos Brown, who has since been charged with first-degree murder.
Zarutska’s death has sparked grief among her family and outrage in the community, with a GoFundMe launched to cover funeral expenses, while political figures have criticised local justice policies for enabling violent offenders. Police say the homicide investigation remains ongoing.
