The New Zealand men’s football team secured a 2-1 victory against Guinea in their opening Olympic match in Nice.
The match was characterised by a flurry of attacks from both sides, with New Zealand goalkeeper Alex Paulsen playing a crucial role in maintaining a clean sheet during the first half despite relentless pressure from Guinea, particularly from Amadou Diallo.
The first half saw Guinea taking ten shots compared to New Zealand’s seven. Matt Garbett, New Zealand’s captain, missed a penalty but quickly redeemed himself by scoring from a poor clearance by Guinea’s goalkeeper, Soumaila Sylla.
Guinea’s disallowed goal due to an offside infringement after a VAR review in the 61st minute was a pivotal moment, keeping the scoreline in New Zealand’s favour.
The second half continued with high tension as Amadou Diaware’s long-range goal for Guinea in the 72nd minute temporarily leveled the match.
However, Ben Waine’s goal five minutes later restored New Zealand’s lead.
Despite continuous pressure from Guinea until the final whistle, New Zealand’s defense held firm, ensuring a hard-fought victory.
This win marks only the second Olympic men’s football victory for New Zealand.
New Zealand will next face the United States in Marseille on Sunday.
