Auckland real estate agent challenges mandatory Treaty training in court

Janet Dickson news

Auckland real estate agent Janet Dickson was in court today seeking a judicial review against the Real Estate Agents Authority’s (REAA) mandate requiring all agents to complete Treaty of Waitangi training.

The training, titled Te Kākano, was developed with Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi to introduce Māori culture, language, customs, and the Treaty of Waitangi in the real estate context.

Dickson, supported by lobby group Hobson’s Pledge, contends that the mandatory nature of the course offers minimal benefit to her practice, which does not involve Māori land, and argues for its voluntary implementation.

Represented by lawyer Nikki Pender, Dickson argued that her objection is not to the course’s content but to its compulsory nature.

The REAA’s lawyer told the court of the alleged importance of ‘cultural awareness’ in providing real estate services to a diverse clientele, stating that the training enhances agents’ ability to engage effectively with all consumers.

The judicial review was expected to conclude today, with the potential for Dickson to face a five-year ban if her license is revoked for non-compliance.

  1. Well done Janet ,with you 100%, where are all the so called men in realestate have they lost their balls why aren’t they speaking up.

  2. This BS needs to be put to bed permanently
This good woman has been f#**ed around for absolutely nothing
Shameful and totally unnecessary state of affairs
    Should never have happened
We all have to be indoctrinated into the belief that maori are a legend in our minds
    Not

  3. This cultural awareness component was inserted into nursing schools in the late 1980s. Nobody challenged it then and so it has grown like Topsy. Now it is where it is just plain silly to have it and worse, it looks like becoming part of the law of the land.
The reason a woman spoke up is because they are not as invested in position, power and money as men are – not a criticism – but men who criticise will be hit harder simply because they can be, without the general backlash of sympathy a woman might evoke.
Even the ‘woke’ choose their targets carefully.

  4. Now we get to see if the campaigning by so called right party’s to end all of this last election means jack s***, now they are in office. Whilst I applaud this lady’s moxie, my guess is not likely. The woke-ism is a powerful weapon to silence dissent and maintain divisions in society, it wont be put aside.
