Peters to visit Viet Nam, Thailand and China for ‘high-level talks’

Winston Peters news

Foreign Affairs and Rail Minister Winston Peters will travel to Viet Nam, Thailand and China next week as part of the Government’s push to strengthen New Zealand’s ties across Southeast Asia and deepen engagement with Beijing.

Peters said Southeast Asia has been a “central focus” of New Zealand’s foreign policy over the past two years, with the Coalition Government aiming to grow economic, security and diplomatic partnerships. He will meet senior leaders in Ha Noi and Bangkok to discuss regional challenges and explore new opportunities for cooperation that benefit both New Zealand and its neighbours.

Following his meetings in Southeast Asia, Peters will travel to Guangzhou, China, where he will attend an event marking New Zealand’s procurement of two new interisland ferries from Guangzhou Shipyard International. The visit will be Peters’ seventh official trip to China and the eighth ministerial visit to the country this year.

Peters said the Government remains committed to strengthening New Zealand’s “strong, mature and mutually respectful” relationship with China, highlighting the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation. He described the ferry procurement project as a milestone that builds on the long-standing and economically vital trade relationship between the two countries.

Peters will depart New Zealand on 25 November and return on 29 November.

  1. Bit pointless talking to political leaders in Thailand at the moment. After the recent ousting of the Thai prime minister by order of the Constitutional Court the government is currently headed by the leader of one of the many minor parties under a deal that calls for a general election to be held early next year.

    • We bought my wife an Oppo last year in China. Amazing spec, more powerful than most of my laptops. Oppo are the new “top-phone” brand in China now BTW.

  2. Acts 16:6 “Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia,” KJV

  3. Like him or not, Winston Peters is the most experienced diplomat NZ has. NZ are fortunate to have a free trade agreement with China. Can you imagine someone like the globe trotting Chloe Swarbrick stepping into that role?

You know the Chinese people who live here are sensible hard working group with integrity. They respect our culture and do not cause trouble.

Never really know what the real purpose of the meetings are. Given the unrest in the world, Peters may be there to touch on that.

There was a time NZ made what they needed from the natural resource we have. To some degree, we still do. But we are not as self-sufficient as we once were.

  4. Yawn, like these nations are really interested in New Zealand. China based on what I have read and heard, when I was there last year is pretty pissed off with NZ, given its incessant US toadying. Don’t expect too much Winston.

  5. Hey Winnie- make sure you visit the tunnels in Cu-Chi, as this is where humanity will live if World War Three goes nuclear..!
Gotta get used to that ‘cozy feeling’ of being underground for a least 3 weeks after the burst, or for 90 years after a Cobalt Bomb pops-off…

  6. Buying some Ferries off China is a business trip not a diplomatic mission as this reads .The only reason he’d be there ,because China recognises who Peters continually refers to as the Pacific’s security threat even though he doesn’t use an American accent. Get our head out of uncle Sams’ arse or stop trading with China…..There’s only one country threatening the worlds security
