Stats NZ eyes move away from traditional census forms

NZ Census news

Stats NZ is contemplating a shift away from traditional census forms, favouring reliance on existing data rather than the periodic survey conducted every five years.

The recently concluded 2023 census achieved a 99 percent population count, primarily through a combination of form submissions by about four-and-a-half million people and representation of another half-million through government data.

Stats NZ Chief Executive Mark Sowden told state media this approach, employed for the second time in New Zealand, had initially been adopted in 2018 due to poor census returns. Sowden said the provision of census data was important for the country and that the methodology to gain it must evolve. With advancements in administrative data quality, the necessity for traditional surveys had diminished over time, he said.

‘As administrative data quality improves, our reliance on form-collected data decreases. We aim to minimise inconvenience to New Zealanders by shifting towards administrative data where feasible.’

Stats NZ plans to consult with the public in May to consider future options, indicating a probable phasing out of the traditional census framework over time.

While acknowledging the superiority of administrative data in numerous aspects, Sowden highlighted the perpetual need for some level of surveying, particularly for data unattainable through administrative channels, such as ‘household mold prevalence.’

Looking ahead he envisioned a future where more frequent data updates, potentially on an annual basis, are facilitated through the use of ‘administrative data’.

  1. Translation: we don’t need to do a rigorous census anymore since we can just spy on you now 😉

    Win/Win?

    • No need to spy, since everything will be dictated to you, once you are in the open air prison, sorry, extremely convenient 15 min cities

  2. Check out when they wanted to come into the home for 2 hours for their ‘Household Economic Survey’ to interview and intimidate Kiwis on their income, how they lived, where they shopped, etc. which effectively is a violation of our Human Rights.
    See below-

Under the UN Human Rights Treaty, Part 1, Item 1.1, we see that New Zealand agreed in 1978 to be legally bound by the ICCPR Articles 12 and 17.

Under Article 17, items 1 & 2 addresses the bound agreement that ‘No one shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, etc. & ‘in reflection, the scope of Article 17 protects privacy, but also from interference with the individual’s family and home life, written affairs, and personal identity and standing.’

The causal effect of this is that the Stats NZ ‘survey’ is that it is actually an audit, and an intrusive one and illegal under International Law and UN Edicts, which we believe such ‘Household Economic Surveys’ conflicts with UN Articles that protect us.

If you get such a letter or random calling card in your letterbox, ignore it, but keep it on file for potential legal action in the future.

Just about the weakest and most laughable example of a reason for yet more government interference I have ever read.
And it is mould – not mold – to whatever US lackey who wrote this.

  4. Just like HR 702 that expanded GLOBAL spying onm Americans and non-Americans!
5-Eyes needs to be abolished in NZ-

  5. Coercion was used heavily to get people to fill the annoying things in, which shows you how little support these govts and their agencies have these days.

If it was ever about using date to help people, my view now, is its just another form of surveillance.

Wonder how long it will be before they start pushing digital ID’s Australia and China style?
