Kim Keon Hee, wife of jailed former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol, has been arrested on charges including stock manipulation, bribery, and election interference.
Prosecutors allege she earned over 800 million won (NZD $950,000) through a price-rigging scheme involving a BMW dealer’s shares, accepted luxury gifts from the Unification Church in exchange for business favours, and meddled in candidate nominations during recent elections.
The court approved her detention citing the risk of evidence destruction, making this the first time both a former president and first lady have been jailed in South Korea. Kim has strongly denied all charges, which partly relate to actions before Yoon’s presidency, with critics claiming they amount to politically motivated lawfare.
