Police reopen more than 50 child protection and sexual assault cases after internal review

Police have reopened more than 50 child protection complaints and adult sexual assault investigations after concerns emerged over the case management of a senior officer.

An initial review of one historic file led to 13 cases being flagged for re-investigation, prompting a wider audit of around 1,000 files overseen by the officer between May 2023 and 2026.

That broader review identified another 40 cases requiring fresh investigation. Police have assigned specialist child protection and adult sexual assault investigators to the reopened files, contacted all affected complainants, and arranged external support services.

The officer is now subject to an employment process, while Police have referred the matter to the Independent Police Conduct Authority and say an internal audit found no evidence of broader systemic failures across the organisation.
