The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a tsunami advisory following the magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
All coastal areas of the North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, Great Barrier Island, and the Chatham Islands are under threat of strong and unusual currents and surges at the shore.
Authorities warn these conditions pose serious danger to swimmers, surfers, fishers, and anyone near the water, and urge people to stay off beaches, out of the sea, and away from harbours, marinas, and estuaries.
While NEMA says coastal flooding is not expected, tsunami activity has already reached parts of New Zealand and may continue for hours. The advisory is expected to remain in place until at least midday today.
