A severe snowstorm over the weekend blanketed parts of New South Wales’ Northern Tablelands with up to 40cm of snow, leaving thousands without power, disrupting phone services, and stranding over 100 vehicles on the New England Highway.
The towns of Guyra, Armidale, Uralla, and Walcha were heavily affected, with emergency shelters like Uralla’s Bolt Inn taking in stranded residents. Black ice created hazardous driving conditions, prompting warnings from the NSW SES.
Essential Energy reported that over 6,000 homes remain without power, down from a peak of 11,000, and repair efforts are underway as weather permits. Mobile outages are also ongoing, with some expected to last until tomorrow.
🇦🇺 Cities in Australia are covered in snow.
A blanket of up to 40 centimeters, like the one we're seeing in New South Wales now, hasn't been seen here since the 80s. pic.twitter.com/6wfB5Tc0zM
