OpenAI CEO’s home hit with Molotov cocktail

The suspect was arrested after he also appeared at the company’s San Francisco headquarters and threatened to burn it down.

The home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was struck with a Molotov cocktail on Friday, San Francisco police said in a statement later confirmed by Altman. The individual was later arrested after appearing at the company’s headquarters and allegedly threatening to burn it down.

The incidents unfolded within around an hour. According to police, a 20-year-old male first approached Altman’s home and threw an “incendiary destructive device,” setting fire to an exterior gate, before fleeing on foot.

About an hour later, officers responded to a report of someone matching the suspect’s description threatening arson at another building, later identified as OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters. The suspect was arrested, with charges pending. Police did not immediately comment on a potential motive. OpenAI confirmed both incidents, with a spokesperson saying no one was hurt.

Altman addressed the situation in a blog post, sharing a photo of his family and expressing hope that “images have power” and might help deter similar attacks.

He added that he “underestimated the power of words and narratives,” noting that the incident came days after “an incendiary article” about him and his company, likely referring to a New Yorker investigation detailing allegations of deception and safety failings at OpenAI, as well as scrutiny over its recent $50 billion Pentagon deal.

Altman said he initially brushed aside the concerns, but the attack prompted him to rethink his views. He outlined broader reflections on AI and regulation, calling for “the rhetoric and tactics” to be de-escalated. He described fears regarding AI as “justified” and stressed the need to “get safety right,” while arguing that it must be “democratized.”

The incident comes at a difficult time for both Altman and OpenAI. The company has faced backlash over its Pentagon deal allowing its technology to be used in classified military operations. Critics warn that the tools could enable warrantless surveillance, with users and developers accusing the company of prioritizing government contracts over public trust.

In a case set to go to trial later this month, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is suing OpenAI and Altman, alleging that the CEO “manipulated” him into donating $38 million on promises that the company would remain a nonprofit. Musk, a co-founder who left in 2018, is seeking Altman’s removal.

OpenAI’s headquarters has been targeted before by protesters. Last month, activists opposing the Pentagon deal wrote messages in chalk outside the building, including: “Technology in service of humanity, not war,” “No AI surveillance state,” and “Is it time to quit?” Last February, police arrested five demonstrators who blocked the entrance as part of a protest by the group Stop AI.

  1. Well when I pull up to every intersection and .I see a camera or 5 I am mot buying the “no surveillance “ narrative.

Cats out of the bag and unfortunately Sam you are the one holing the torch. Well yes it’s lovely you have a baby and all but so do we. We are as human , possibly more, than you. We are being driven – corralled – into poverty while people like yourself live in luxury, private jets and above all the rules that apply to us , so yah we’re not happy..

and now you have a kid you realise the stakes don’t you? Welcome to our world. Where fear and anxiety are everyday occurrences for us.

See, money doesn’t buy you peace or happiness.

  2. Well, what should one expect when his A.I. company ‘hallucinates’ false info on people, accusing them of being terrorists, felons, and paedophiles?
Look yourselves up on any and all A.I. platforms…I know a man who was profiled as a terrorist, and his family showed-up as felons after inquiring their names in OpenAI. They were slandered, and someone had to program the OpenAI to list this textual description.
That family sued OpenAI, but the media never reported on it!
Those who can’t afford lawyers to prosecute their cases of OpenAI / Social Credit / Digital ID slander, defamation and disenfranchisement resort to Molotov Cocktails, drive by shootings, and explosive device drone drops on top of the homes of those who perpetrate such antics via technology!
And most of those AI / High tecj CEO, COO, Presidents, etc are…J3wi$h!!!!!!!!!!!!!
