Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the immediate dismantling of all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programmes within the Department of Defense (DoD), aligning with President Donald Trump’s executive order to terminate all federal DEI initiatives.
Hegseth said he wants strict compliance, stating that non-compliance would result in job termination. There would be “no exceptions, name-changes, or delays”, he said.
The move follows Trump’s broader directive, which also mandates the closure of DEI offices across federal agencies, the cancellation of DEI-related contracts, and the removal of associated digital content.
The administration asserts that such policies undermine civil rights laws by promoting race- and sex-based preferences over individual merit.
The DoD joins other agencies, including the FBI, in eliminating DEI programmes with the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) reporting $420 million in canceled DEI contracts.
Trump’s orders also formalised the recognition of only two genders and targeted workplace and educational policies tied to DEI practices.
